This handcrafted sterling silver pendant captures the distinctive form of the Ruru, New Zealand’s native owl. Carved by Maddy with careful attention to detail, the design highlights the Ruru’s expressive features and quiet, watchful character.
Set into the pendant is a piece of New Zealand jade, hand-carved and carefully fitted into the design. The natural green of the jade contrasts beautifully with the brightness of the silver, creating a piece that feels both earthy and distinctly connected to the New Zealand landscape.
The pendant is cast using the lost-wax method, allowing the original carving to retain its individual character while giving each piece its own subtle variations in texture and detail.
The Ruru, also known as the Morepork, is a small native owl found throughout New Zealand. Mostly active at night, the Ruru is known for its distinctive “ruru” call and its quiet, mysterious presence in the bush. With its large eyes, rounded head and beautifully patterned feathers, it is one of New Zealand’s most recognisable native birds.
The Ruru has long been part of the natural landscape of Aotearoa and is often associated with the stillness and mystery of the night. This pendant celebrates the character of this fascinating native bird through hand carving, traditional casting techniques and the natural beauty of New Zealand jade.
Every pendant is individually crafted, combining the character of the Ruru with the natural textures of bronze and jade. Small variations in the carving, casting and stone will make each piece unique.
