Small Bronze Hei Tiki Mako
 
This Hei Tiki – Mako design features the back adorned with the designs of the Mako shark, one of the Pacific’s great ocean voyagers.
These hei tiki are part of a series that uses the concept of re-scaling, combining traditional carving practices with modern processes. Initially, the profile form is carved in pounamu and a mould is taken.
 
This piece, being one of five styles of Hei Tiki created for the series at 12cm , is then hand carved in wax. In their larger scale, they are cast into bronze and digitally scanned.
Once scanned, they are placed onto the computer for re-scaling and printed in resin.
After the resin form has been printed, a master mould is made for each piece in its new size. They are then reproduced in wax, cast into bronze, and finally sanded and polished by hand, with the addition of a black patina.
 
Mixing the ancient with the modern, each piece has been designed, created, and finished by Nick.
