This Huia pendant has been created by Maddy and directly inspired by the native fauna of Aoteroa New Zealand.
It is cast in solid sterling silver, with a Pounamu cabochon insert.
 
Endemic to New Zealand, the Huia has been extinct since the early 20th century.
It was the largest wattlebird of NZ, characterized by its deep black feathers and white tipped tail. The female was dramatically bigger than the male, and her bill was much longer; it was the most pronounced sexual dimorphism in bill of any bird species in the world. They both exhibited an orange wattle at the base of their bill.
 
In Māori culture, the Huia were not normally eaten. Being already rare birds, they were treasured for their precious feathers being then worn, traded for other valuable goods such as Pounamu or given as a token of friendship and respect.
 
 
This piece can be cast in solid sterling silver, yellow gold or bronze, and different stones can also be set on demand.
